The UN General Assembly has just voted to describe the transatlantic slave trade as ‘the gravest crime against humanity’.
Three countries voted against, and 52 abstained. My video is on what these votes illustrate, in case we forgot.
The ones voting against were the U.S., Israel, and Argentina. In the 52 abstentions, we find the U.K. and all 27 EU member states.
In short, we shouldn’t be surprised. There’s nothing surprising in seeing those who can’t condemn the mass murder of brown children now choosing not to condemn the harm of unseen magnitude that was unleashed onto black people in the past (an injustice that’s nowhere near being undone). And it’s not just the ex-colonisers; it’s the whole EU.
We shouldn’t be surprised – but we should be enraged. We should be able to see who the ones in power are and what kind of mentality we’re up against.

On The Global Sumud Flotilla, What The World with Israel in It Looks Like, And What It Does to Our Nervous Systems
