On The Global Sumud Flotilla, What The World with Israel in It Looks Like, And What It Does to Our Nervous Systems

If you keep yourself informed, you might have noticed that to exist in the same world as Israel is one huge blow to our nervous systems.

Israel’s recent attacks on the Global Sumud Flotilla serve as yet another reminder of what has become normalised, and what the world with Israel in it looks like.

The kidnapping from international waters of Thiago Avila and Saif Abu Keshek from the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli forces, as well as their illegal detention in Israel, is yet another example of the horrors that the world has allowed.

My video is a summary of these horrors, and an invitation to accept that, as long as Israel exists, crimes will continue to be committed against my humanity and yours.

I have to admit that there are times when I feel those crimes against my humanity more acutely. I am in Cairo now, where my heart feels both very happy and extremely heavy. It is due to the mix of what is happening with the flotilla, but also the proximity to Palestine, meeting with my Palestinian friends and acquaintances, and even my (don’t get me wrong, absolutely exciting) collaboration with a lovely NGO that I will tell you about in my upcoming posts.

But the heaviness of the heart is always there; only its normalisation levels might differ, depending on where I am and who I’m with. I’ve recorded this video because I am sure (I know) I am not the only one whose head is continuously exploding, and we have to remember to normalise and talk about it, too.

So this video is partly on that heaviness. It’s a crossover between this project, The Exploding Head, and Investigative Selfism, my platform on mental health, where I also encourage my audience to be unapologetically antifascist.

My video is a reminder of both what that world has been and why it is absolutely OK for our hearts and minds to be heavy, but also what we have to work towards, even if it takes a lifetime.

Here’s one of the points I make in my video, as a visual to share:

What, According to My Government, Other Countries Can Learn from Israel

This is the most straightforward way I can put it: just like there are countries in history known for their collaboration with the Nazi regime, my country, Lithuania, has inscribed itself as one of the staunchest supporters of Israel, no matter the scale, depravity, or geography of its crimes. See if my rage resonates with…
