Germany just announced it would suspend its arms to Israel. That’s great.
This decision also comes after having empowered Israel to make the very same claim that Germany says it is now appalled by.
This is what supposedly prompted Germany to reconsider its long-standing policy of sending arms to Israel: it was the announcement by Israel’s security cabinet to take over northern Gaza.
It wasn’t the scale of Israel’s destruction of Gaza, it wasn’t a single UN report calling Israel’s conduct in Gaza as amounting to the crime against humanity of extermination, it wasn’t all the humanitarian organisations ringing the alarms about widespread man-made famine and the daily killings by the Israeli-run and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
There were no red lines for Germany’s support to Israel, which extends to diplomatic sheltering and a brutal suppression of anti-genocide protests. Germany’s military support itself, let’s not forget, was not a drop in the ocean. Not only has Germany been one of Israel’s major arms suppliers for years leading up to its genocide, but during it, too.

You may remember Germany’s very recent refusal to change its position and halt its arms export to Israel: “Germany vows to continue sending arms to Israel” – an article just from June 4, 2025.
In short, is this move very much needed, and should it be welcomed? Absolutely.
Has it come after an announcement the path for which was laid by Germany itself? Absolutely.
And that is the context that is critical here. We will never forget how shameful and despicable its timeline has been and how German leaders (together with more EU leaders) should one day face justice in the Hague because of their active role in enabling Israel’s genocide — which, in turn, has been a European genocide, too.

On The Global Sumud Flotilla, What The World with Israel in It Looks Like, And What It Does to Our Nervous Systems
To exist in the world where Israel, too, exists – to physically be and function in such a world – is hard on our nervous systems. The new horrors of the kidnapping of Thiago Avila and Saif Abu Keshek are yet another reminder of how that heaviness won’t go away, as long as Israel -…
How Did Jon Stewart Miss The Greatest Piece of Satire on His Show?
Here’s a reminder that choosing to interview someone who history – and, hopefully, the ICJ – will remember as a war criminal and a genocide enabler, like Annalena Baerbock, is very much not cool. Especially when you have a massive platform.
