Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and Palestinian Sumud in The Courts of The Occupier

Kamal Adwan Hospital director Hussam Abu Safiya

This is not your regular trial. This is not your usual court. Because this is not a normal country.

When Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and his lawyer appeal to the Israeli Supreme Court, we have to understand what we’re actually seeing.

This week, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, appeared via a video call in a Supreme Court hearing in Israel. As the cameras were soon not allowed to show more, shackled and showing signs of abuse, Dr. Safiya appeared in the following video for only a minute.

In my video below, I invite you to zoom out, remember, and name what we’re actually seeing when Dr. Safiya is being represented by his lawyer in this court.

We’re seeing Palestinian sumud. We’re seeing an attempt to go against a fascist court of an apartheid state. We’re seeing an attempt to appeal for justice in the court of the occupier.

Why? Because our governments have done nothing to prevent this. And some of our governments – like mine – have even supported Israel’s ability to continue torturing medics in its prisons with complete impunity.

I hope you stay healthily enraged. I hope you turn it into action.

Please sign the following petitions: by Amnesty International and CODEPINK.

I also invite you to follow Dr. Hussam’s Instagram page for more updates.

In a grotesque way, to see what is the opposite of standing with Palestinian medics, you can see what my own country, Lithuania, has been doing in this respect. If you’re wondering if this is one of the sources of deep shame that I feel daily, it is.

As always, stay strong, check on others, and keep your heart open.

How to Make (No) Sense of The New Lebanese Agreement with Israel

As the Lebanese government signs an agreement with Israel, seemingly disregarding the leverage Iran is currently granting them, what does this all mean? What does it mean for Hezbollah, Lebanese resistance, and the future of the country itself?
